Junyuan Primary 3 Leadership Programme

Thank you for leading and teaching us, always make fun of us and sing funny songs! - Primary 3 student, Xu Zhen Han

I was a little hesitant going into this programme, doubting the ability of the Primary 3 students to have the physical and mental fortitude to complete the ridge trek on Mt Faber. My doubts eased away slowly as I saw the enthusiasm of the participants from the get-go, as if to say that they were ready to conquer the challenges ahead. The trek was labourious, and the participants not only needed to conquer the undulating slopes and the elements, but also challenging activities that tested their individual mettle and ability to work as a team. For their effort, the kids were well rewarded with a lesson in resilience, and the beaming faces that they wore at the end of the trek were a testament to that. - Facilitator Sherman

LDC brought the whole primary 3 cohort from Junyuan Primary School to Hortpark at Henderson Road. The main objective of the trek was to inculcate the sense of resilience in the students as it is one of the school’s character values. The participants were made to bring along certain necessities such as 1.5 litres of water and face towel.  Throughout the trek, they were tasked to look out for several landmarks that could be found only along the trail. There were also 2 game stations that doubled up as rest stations for the participants. We were felt apprehensive initially as the trek was relatively long and with the weight of the bags, the trek may be to challenging for a 9 year old. However, the participants were very energetic and managed to go through the trail without any hiccups.   All in all, the objectives of the programme were met and the participants had a great time while learning. - Facilitator Halim

The trip to Hort Park was basically to test the level of endurance and resilience for the primary 3 students. The students initially had to climb up the summit of Mount Faber which was in fact tiring for both trainers and teachers and thus, we could empathize with the P3 kids for feeling exhausted while climbing up and their complaints about the weather. The activities that were held, particularly the Team Link, also put the kids’ endurance level to the limit as the activity was carried out under the hot weather. By this time, the kids were already complaining relentlessly and inevitably some disagreements occurred among themselves. It was only after the debrief by the stationmaster that the kids acknowledged that teamwork and cooperation are required to achieve their goals. Nevertheless, upon reaching the Henderson Waves, the kids managed to put their discomforts aside (for a while) and enjoyed the scenery before making their journey down (and start complaining again) to make their way back to school, taking back with them valuable lessons since they knew that they had persevered and endured various discomforts during the journey. – Facilitator Rabiatuladawiyah

We took the Junyuan Primary 3 Cohort to The Treetop Walk from Telok Blangah Park to Harbourfront Station. The hike was designed to test their resilience, to see if they were able to overcome trivial complaints or discomforts to achieve their goal. The lively and hyperactive group quickly turned into a panting and sweating group constantly clamouring for breaks. However, as time wore on and they realised they were not getting any breaks no matter how much they complained, they began to motivate each other and push each other to complete the hike, even going as far as helping to share the loads of the weaker students. It is difficult for young ones, nowadays, to look past their personal comfort or needs first, and through this event, I believe that we were all witnesses to how this aspect of them was easily displaced by their concern for others in need. I was very impressed by their level of commitment, and I think the sense of achievement that they all received was well worth their effort!  - Facilitator Xi Wei

A trip to Hort Park is something which I had been looking forward to. An outdoor education is always exciting and much can be taught during the trip. Telling them on the history of each site makes them realise why it had to be in that situation now. It makes them aware on how the flaura and fauna  grow and what can be found during the trip. Along the hike, there some games station for them to complete. Unfortunately my class are not able to complete the station as most of them did not adhere to the rules of the game. The hike took about 2 hours to complete. The class complained they were tired and hungry during the walk but they endure till the end of the journey as they learned a valuable lesson throughout the journey which is resilience.  - Facilitator Azman
